While I don't often ask myself this question in those quiet moments, I did find this LA Times article from this week a nice step back in time.
Hughes made some of the most popular movies around when I was growing up, including Weird Science, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Breakfast Club.
I guess he's kind of a recluse now.
Addendum...some people had the "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out, John!" feeling when he rode off to Chicago's north shore.
