Just in Case You Forgot

Coming up on 7 years ago, some bad people did some very bad things in America.

The Republicans think, I guess, that you might have forgotten. So they made up a video of what happened to show to their delegates and the nation during the convention.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Olbermann went nuts over it, and, as usual, he was a little bit too melodramatic, but we agree that it was really kind of creepy how they threw this in there.

I know what the cynical me thinks that I'm supposed to take away from their decision to show this video...

Not only did the republicans completely dodge their record on the issues during the convention, but they again try to play up 9/11 as if they can keep us safe better than the other guys.

Too bad the republicans were at the helm when the worst domestic terrorist attack occurred. Not only that but they completely botched the response. Sure there were pictures of GW on the rubble, but there was an outpouring of sympathy and support for the US and they turned it on its head within a few short months.

I cant believe we even continue to swallow this. The last 8 years must have cured the collective gag reflex of Americans.

Have we had any terrorist incidents in the last seven years? They must have done something right. An accomplishment, perhaps?

Hey, let's do this. Let's tear down all the memorials. We'll go back to the War of Independence. Tear 'em all down so no one can exploit them or talk about them. Let's ban any speech about 9/11, Vietnam, Korea, WWII, WWI, Civil War, etc.

The was the proverbial straw that got Olbermann sacked at MSNBC off of political coverage. If MSNBC reacted to it this way, it had to be pretty bad.

But the let the big one happen despite memos titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" and the like.

The administration completely dropped the ball on terrorism, and has done many things to increase the likelihood that an attack will occur, and that it would be done with WMD.

It flies in the face of reason that this party could claim that somehow they are more qualified to keep us safe.

Again, typical republican chest bumping and johnson measuring.

Listen, I was working on the Hill at the time and was there for 9/11. (No, not looking for any sort of recognition, just establishing that I knew the environment at the time.)

Let's jump into the way back machine...

What was happening during the summer of 2001? Bush was still trying to get his cabinet positions filled, but Senate Democrats were putting holds on appointees in the administration, due to the recent unpleasantness after the 2000 Election.

Bush basically had just gotten the Cabinet Secretaries approved, but everyone below that pay grade was 1.) a Clinton staffer just biding their time before finding a new job, or 2.) vacant positions that were held by Clinton staffers that had left.

It was next to impossible to get anything done within the government for the first 9 months of 2001, since there were either people who wouldn't do their job, or no one there to do it. In the Senate, the minority party had brought everything to a standstill.

After 9/11, the Democrats pulled back and a lot, not all, of the administration officials were fast tracked for approval.

In addition, it's hard to attribute the previous eight years of failed leadership on going after terrorists on the first nine months of a new administration.

So, a movie (brought to you by the Republicans) about 9-11 (which was brought to you by the Democrats).

And Olbermann's reaction, which you and I only disagree on the degree to which it was over the top, does not make the video any more tasteful. This was no pure memorial like the ones you mention in your posting.

If memorializing was all they were about, they would not be doing it during the televised portion of the convention. It was to perpetuate the notion that the GOP is more equipped to handle these sorts of situations.

To summarize, 9-11 was the fault of the following combination:

1992-2000 - Democrats in the Executive branch

2001 - Democrats in the Executive and Legislative branches
