The Socialist Bickering Continues
I know, I know...the friggin' election is over. And, I should have caught this a little earlier, but I checked out Hendrik Hertzberg's neato blog over at The New Yorker and he's right on the same page with me when it comes to calling the Wasilla Hillbillly out on her socialist oil profit sharing.

Let Sarah Be...For Your Own Good
I didn't expect that I'd ever be defending Sarah Palin...from (using my John McCain airquotes) "Republicans," no less, but it's the position I find myself in this morning. Some staffers, who apparently share the integrity gene with the mountain goat, have decided to throw the Governor under the bus, accusing her of a full range of nonsense caused by her being a stupid hillbilly, basically.
I don't dispute the claims they made about her nor would I excuse them for a Vice President were they true, which I suspect most are.
But if this woman was so incompetent to not know that Africa is a continent, not a single country, it was practically criminal of them to not be screaming bloody murder during the campaign to get someone so unfit for office off the ticket.
I understand the motivation to protect the bossman and can even appreciate some degree of deceptiveness in said pursuit, but this scheme is just so ill-thought-out because at the end of the day, if you believe their claims about Palin, the loss was all McCain's fault...just like he said in his speech.

Funniest Thing I've Read in Personal Correspondence Today
from liberal, friend, co-worker and occasional reader, DB...
What's funny is when I see comments online from people who actually live in socialist countries who think that Americans are morons for calling Barack a socialist. Maybe people just use "socialist" the same way that I use "dumbass" to describe Palin.

Comrade Palin
I continue to be amazed at how otherwise-smart friends of mine will insist that, unlike McCain and Palin, Barry is a "socialist," implying that their ticket is not.I won't carry on about how they're all for some form of a progre$$ive tax, but why no one pushes back hard on Sarah about her demonstrated record of socialism in Alaska is completely beyond me.
Sure, there's the rap about how the press is very pro-Obama, and I have to admit that the coverage does appear to lean his way, too, but if the press completely had it out for the McCain ticket as is claimed, why aren't they pouncing on how she redistributed the wealth from the oil companies in her state like this?

Tactics and Strategies
In the Oxford debate, Rambo accused Whitey of not understanding the difference between a strategy and a tactic...specifically when it came to The Surge in Iraq. This morning, Peggy Noonan was on MTP and she better-articulated a point I tried to make the other day to some friends after the debate. I was annoyed with the Gov's folksy charm because I saw it more as a lack of depth rather than a way to accomplish some particular goal.
The former Reagan staffer said it better, arguing that McPalin seems to be using populism as its strategy rather than a tactic. This seems to be the point I was grasping for, but missed.
While I still have plenty of problems with the fluff provided by the other guys, 'I'm for the Joe Six-Packs of the country' can only be tolerated in limited doses and as part of a larger argument behind the merits of your candidacy.
Again, this might all be hidden, but for now, I ain't seein' it...

A Little College Humor Funny on The Gov'nor
I'm anxious to see if we will observe the same over-nerved Governor Palin tonight from the last few weeks or if there's that pit-bull of a maverick.
In the meantime...

And You Think You Have Problems?
When you're the first woman to appear on a the Presidential ticket for the GOP, it's 40-some days out from the election and National Review runs an editorial piece begging you to withdraw your name, it pretty much sucks to be you.Better start earning an honest living, young Levi. If the Gov doesn't move to the Naval Observatory, she's going to be riding your ass like...oh nevermind.
Oh My Goodness, This is a Train Wreck
Now, watch the whole video, because some wise ass shoved some funny audio into the middle, but even when Madame Governor is trying to be serious, it's just so clear now that she's in over her head on this one. I'm almost cringing, thinking what the October 2 veep debate could be like if this is any indication. I'm sure you've seen/heard other parts of the interview, like her bizarre 'Alaskan airspace' explanation, so I won't put it all up here.

A Dog's Got Personality. And Personality Goes a Long Way.
Barack comes through with the line of the day, off-handedly calling Governor Palin a pig with lipstick...and don't even tell me this was unintentional. Actually, now that I read this again, I don't know which metaphor was more vulgar...

Science in the Classroom
So as I understand it, Governor Palin believes in some form of creationism and is open to creationism being taught in schools, in a science class, next to evolution as an alternative intperpretation. If we're gong to do this, in a reproduction class, should we teach about the virgin birth of Christ as an alternate way a woman can become with child? If it's in the Bible, and we see the Bible as containing a legitimate interpretation of fact, it probably should.
Likewise, when one dies, we teach in some biology classes about rigor mortis and all the stages the body goes thru. Should we list as an exception to this, what happened to JC when he died? The justification would be the same as above.
To be clear, i have no problem at all and am not questioning or commenting on things taken as articles of faith. My issue is with people who take that article of faith and think that it should fit into a science class as alternate, on-par, plausible interpretation for all of us.
I don't care that much what Governor Palin or others believe in their hearts as articles of faith. I won't mock it or agree with it. I'm also not too concerned about what little kids are going to learn in science class (at least as far as my Presidential candidates are concerned) but I am interested in someone being elected who cannot compartmentalize what is science and what is faith, and allows them to spill into each other.

One Thing We Can Agree on About Candidate Palin
While I run the risk of being corrected by certain Minnesotans whose ears are better-attuned to such things, Sarah Palin does have the cutest sort of upper-Midwest accent, doesn't she?
Children as Props
I posted something about this the other day, but here's an AP opinion piece on candidates using their children as campaign props...and how families are cool as long as the pol is the one driving the message.

Election Hokey Pokey
I'm still leaving myself a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to the choice of Governor Palin.
I'm holding out a little bit of hope that HuffingtonPost (and Cody) are wrong...that the pick was not one of an imbecile or a completely patronizing pol.
And, while I realize that my little corner of the internets does not even register as being important, I've tried to hold to my personal editorial decision not to go into the family issues that have come to light on the GOP side, but rules are made to be broken.
Part of the justification for the Governor's being on the ticket is her personal story, including the family she's raised. While I find it appalling that the family situation made it into the press, and, from the bottom of my heart, feel that this is none of my damned business, it's hard for me to take seriously the "leave family out of it!" retort we're hearing from Camp McCain now.
If you are ready to trot out your family as one of the big virtues you bring to the campaign then, unfortunately, you've made them eligible for at least some degree of scrutiny. I don't in any way justify or apologize for the story coming out, but the Palin folks have shown a great degree of comfortableness with using their children as props in the last few days.
Again, I go back to the Clintons and the admirable way they kept Chelsea out of his presidential activities.
Selah.

We're On a Mission from God
I'm in a class today and tomorrow, so little time for this, but HuffPo continues with the goodies on Palin...
