Forty Years Ago Today

Hizzoner, The Late Mayor Richard J. Daley, made headlines when he told reporters how he instructed his Top Cop to deal with the post-MLK-assassination rioting in the city of Chicago.

"I said to him very emphatically and very definitely that an order be issued by him immediately to shoot to kill any arsonist or anyone with a Molotov cocktail in his hand, because they're potential murderers, and to shoot to maim or cripple anyone looting."

He later claimed that the 'shoot to kill' line was a fabrication.

With a tip of the hat to STR, I give you the occasionally-honorable Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago.

As a native of the greater Chicagoland area and a proud graduate of Loyola University Chicago, I look back fondly on listening to him on the news when he got all fired up over something.

He's got his boxers in a wad this time over a budget to keep the CTA running.

Just remember...the policeman isn't there to create disorder.
